The Long Lake project will modernize aging flood control infrastructure to better protect a 2,780-acre Orange County watershed from extreme rainfall.
Drummond Carpenter has been selected by Orange County to lead engineering design for the Long Lake Pump Station Infrastructure Improvements Project, the largest Florida project win in the firm’s history.
The project addresses a critical piece of Orange County’s flood control infrastructure. Long Lake Pump Station helps control lake levels during heavy rain events and reduce flooding risk across the surrounding watershed.
Planned improvements include replacing diesel-driven pumps manufactured in 1964 with electric pumps, adding emergency power and rehabilitating 900 feet of leaking force main. Each new pump will have a capacity of 20,000 gallons per minute.
For Drummond Carpenter, the selection builds on years of partnership with Orange County and reflects the increasingly complex projects the firm is being trusted to lead.
DC has executed or completed more than 100 projects for Orange County across several departments. Since 2020, the firm has served as prime consultant on 16 analysis and design projects for the County’s Stormwater Management Division, with work ranging from watershed modeling to infrastructure assessment.
“Over the past eight years, Orange County has given us opportunities to take on increasingly complex challenges and prove what our team can do,” said Lee Mullon, PE, CFM, BC.WRE, PMP, a Senior Principal at Drummond Carpenter. “We’re proud of the confidence the County has placed in us. And we know the real measure of this project will be its impact on the community and the people who live there.”
That partnership also means DC comes to Long Lake with a deep understanding of the flood risks Orange County is working to address. Through its work on the Orange County Vulnerability Assessment, DC analyzed flood exposure across the county’s critical infrastructure and studied the Long Lake area specifically, including flooding along Beggs Road and North Pine Hills Road. The work gave the team direct familiarity with the watershed and how flooding moves through it.
Long Lake builds on that work, moving from understanding vulnerability to designing infrastructure that can help reduce it.
The selection also marks a significant point in DC’s growth as a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business. With Long Lake, DC becomes the first SDV firm to win an Orange County sole-selection prime project of this size and type.
Orange County’s SDV program has been an important part of that growth, creating opportunities for DC to establish its track record with the County and take on larger assignments over time. Long Lake reflects how far that partnership has progressed: DC will now lead the design of a major flood control project for a community and watershed it already knows well.
For DC, that is what makes Long Lake significant beyond the size of the contract. The firm has spent years working alongside Orange County to understand its flood risks. Now, it will help turn that knowledge into infrastructure designed to reduce those risks for the people who call this community home.
